The best Instagram spots in Malta
I’ve included details below of how to get to all the best Instagram spots in Malta by public transport. There are more places to visit in my Malta seven day itinerary.
Alternatively, rent a car or scooter and drive yourself to the best Malta Instagram spots.
Valletta Instagram spots

Malta’s historic capital is a photographer’s paradise and the best all round Malta Instagram spot. It wasn’t given UNESCO World Heritage status for nothing.
Created in 1565, I love getting lost in the winding lanes and cobbled streets. For the best Instagram places, head to the picturesque pedestrian streets of Triq Sant’ Orsla, Strait Street and St. Lucia’s Street.

One of my favourite things about photographing Valletta is the abundance of old-fashioned signage and traditional Maltese balconies, which all make great subjects for your pictures of Malta.
In addition to wandering the streets until you find an angle you like, consider taking a walk all around the peninsula of Valletta. It’s on walks around here that I’ve found some of my favourite shots. You’ll find plenty of harbour views with pretty wooden boats, ideal inspiration for your Instagram feed. A trip to Valletta is one of the very best things to do in Malta.
How to reach Valletta’s Instagram spots

I’ve included a map below with some suggested locations in Valletta. As well as heading for these specific Instagram spots, wander aimlessly around Valletta and you’re sure to find something interesting to photograph.
Mdina and Rabat

Second only to Valletta for being one of Malta’s best Instagram spots, is Mdina. Known as the silent city, this Medieval walled city is absolutely beautiful.
Wander the peaceful pedestrian alleyways and gaze up at the yellow stone buildings, so typical of Malta.
Look out for the military bastions, palaces, churches, and museums, which all make great shots for Instagram. You can also get great views out across the island from Mdina’s high walls.
Scroll any Malta Instagram account and you’ll likely discover that some of the most instagrammable shots in Mdina are the blue door with pink bougainvillea and the grand city gate. When visiting Malta it’s one of the most popular spots for photos.

Whilst these make pretty backdrops, for something a bit different, head down into St Paul’s catacombs, just outside the old city walls. You’ll need a fast lens for the darkness but this an atmospheric experience in Malta. I found it both moving and a little bit scary on my visit.
How to get to Mdina
It’s easy to get around Malta by bus. From Valletta, take bus #51, #52 or #53, which will take you directly to Mdina in half an hour.
From Sliema or St Julian’s, take bus #202, with a journey time of just over an hour.
Alternatively, book a Malta Uber or Bolt to take you to Mdina directly from your accommodation.
Marsaxlokk

The pretty harbour of Marsaxlokk is home to a fleet of traditional Maltese boats, the Luzzu or Dgħajsa.
These painted wooden boats are symbolic of Malta and, as such, make Marsaxlokk one of the great Malta photo spots. Walk along the harbour front as you take shots of the boats bobbing in the water to add a flash of colour to your Instagram feed.
How to get to Marsaxlokk
From Valletta, take bus #81 to Marsaxlokk. Get off at the bus stop called ‘Marsaxlokk’. Journey time is 35 minutes.

Upper Barrakka Gardens

Back in Valletta, don’t miss a chance to enjoy another of Malta’s Instagram spots, the Upper Barrakka Gardens.
Perched on top of the bastion walls, the Upper Barrakka Gardens offer breathtaking views across the Grand Harbour, framing the Three Cities with a natural, picturesque backdrop. It’s a spot that’s a treasure trove for your Malta Instagram photos.
Use this panoramic vantage point to your advantage. Early morning or late afternoon light casts a golden hue over the harbour, perfect for that golden-hour shot.
How to get to the Upper Barrakka Gardens
Easily accessible from the city centre, the gardens are a short stroll from the main streets of Valletta. The Barrakka lift offers a quick ascent from the waterfront, making the journey a fun part of the adventure.
St Peter’s Pool and Il Kalanka

For more great photos of Malta, don’t miss a trip to St Peter’s Pool. This naturally formed swimming spot is a classic Malta experience. As such, it can get busy which makes it difficult to get the photos you want.
A top tip is to walk a bit further along the coast until you reach il Kalanka. This is another swimming spot which has a very similar aesthetic to St Peter’s Pool but is usually less busy than it’s more well-known neighbour. I enjoyed hours swimming and walking the lunar-like rock formations here.
How to find St Peter’s Pool and Il Kalanka
To get to St Peter’s Pool and Il Kalanka, first head to Marsaxlokk and then either walk or take a short boat trip from the harbour, (price is from €5).
Check out my article on to St Peter’s Pool and Il Kalanka for detailed directions for the walk.
Popeye Village (Anchor Bay)

Popeye Village at Anchor Bay is one of the quirkier Malta Instagram spots. Originally built for the 1980 movie Popeye, with Robin Williams, this film set is now a Popeye themed amusement park.
There are plenty of subjects for your photos, including the wooden houses, cartoon characters and a glistening beach.
If you don’t want to pay to go in, it’s still worth a trip, as I found great views from the cliffs above, which cost nothing to visit.
How to get to Popeye Village
To get to Popeye Village, take bus #41 or #42 from Valletta. The journey is quite long at one and a half hours, plus a 20 minute walk. Take an Uber if you want to shorten the trip.
Check the up-to-date bus timetables on the Malta Public Transport website.
Blue Grotto
The Blue Grotto must be on your list of day trips in Malta, it’s a unique place to see on the island. Whilst you’re there, make sure you get some shots of all that aqua loveliness for Instagram.
How to get to the Blue Grotto
From Valletta, take bus #74 (journey time is one hour). The bus stop is a 15-minute walk from the boat trips.
Gozo salt pans

One of the most appealing Gozo Instagram spots are the Gozo salt pans. Located on the northern coast of Gozo, the shapes and forms of the salt pans make for a great back drop to your Malta photos.
To get to Gozo, take the Gozo ferry from ÄŠirkewwa or Valletta.
How to find the Gozo salt pans
Hiking around Gozo is one of the best ways to really see Malta’s sister island. Head to Xwejni Beach and the Qolla I-Bajda Battery for views of the salt pans.
Note that further west along the coast there are even more salt pans but these have notices up warning you not to walk on them, as they are still in use today.
If you prefer not to hike, from Mgarr Harbour, take bus #301 or #303 to Victoria (15 minutes) then swap to bus #310 to Xwejni.
St John’s Co-Cathedral
Head to Valletta’s famous St John’s Co-Cathedral for sumptuous backdrops for your photos. Situated in the centre of the capital, it houses the famous Caravaggio painting ‘The Beheading of St John the Baptist’.
As you step inside, you’re greeted by the opulent interior, adorned with intricate carvings, gilded arches and paintings. The cathedral’s floor tells a story of the knights who once called Malta home.
Churches like St. John’s Co-Cathedral often have low lighting. To capture it well, increase your ISO setting and consider using a tripod to stabilise your shots in the dim light.
Remember, this is a place of worship and check the rules on photography before you start taking your shots.
How to get to St John’s Co-Cathedral
Tickets cost €15 and the Cathedral is closed to visitors on Sundays.
Tal-Mixta Cave, Gozo
For a classic Instagram spot in Gozo, head to the ochre-coloured sands of Ramla Bay. This is one of the most well-known beaches and bays on Gozo.
As well as providing a beautiful beach scene for your Malta photos, Ramla Bay is the location of the Tal-Mixta Cave. This is a great spot to walk up to for your Instagram shots.
You can also explore a little further up the west side of Ramla Bay to get some artistic photos in the graffiti-covered abandoned hotel building of Ulysses Lodge.
How to find Tal-Mixta cave
Head to Ramla via bus #302 from Victoria (journey time is 25 minutes) or walk the whole way (65 minutes).
Blue Lagoon and Crystal Lagoon Comino

When in Malta you must visit the stunning Blue Lagoon on Comino. Sure, it’s overrun with visitors in peak season but it’s still a sight to behold.
If you don’t fancy fighting for a space on the tiny amount of beach, book a boat trip to the Blue Lagoon instead.
As well as having the bluest water you can imagine (no filter needed for these Malta photos) there are walks to historic and abandoned buildings and the stunning Crystal Lagoon to explore on Comino.
How to get to the Blue Lagoon and Crystal Lagoon
Several companies run ferries to the Blue Lagoon or book a boat trip.
Dingli Cliffs

Back on the island of Malta, take a walk along the Dingli Cliffs to get stunning photos of Malta’s coastline. Located on the west coast of Malta, the views from here are immense.
Dingli is also home to one of the unique Malta Instagram spots, the Dingli radar station. Looking like a giant golf ball, this futuristic structure makes a great backdrop for your photos.
How to get to the Dingli Cliffs
The #52 bus goes from Valletta to Dingli village, from there you’ll need to walk out to the cliffs. Or take bus #201 from Mdina to the Vizitaturi stop, located at the cliffs.
The Three Cities

Located just over the water of Malta’s Grand Harbour and opposite Valletta are the charming streets of Malta’s Three Cities.

Cospicua, Senglea and Vittoriosa (also known as Bormla, Isla and Birgu) are home to winding alleyways and colourful doorways that seem like they were made for Instagram. I loved wandering without a destination in mind and discovering a fresh view around each corner.

As well as the instagrammable backdrop, the Three Cities has fortified walls and a fascinating Malta at War Museum, with miles of underground air raid shelters.
The Three Cities are also one of the best places to stay in Malta if you don’t have a car.
How to get to the Three Cities
Head over on a traditional Maltese boat for a few euros. The departure point in Valletta is the Lascaris Water Taxi station (marked on Google maps), almost opposite the bottom of the Barrakka lift.
Wied il Mielah, Gozo

Although one of Malta’s most instagrammable places, the Blue Window, is no more (due to it collapsing into the sea below), worry not, there is a new kid in town.
Actually, Gozo’s Wied il Mielah has been around for a long time but has become more prominent since the Blue Window, at the Inland Sea, collapsed.
This natural arch is a sight to behold. Visit at sunset for maximum Instagram appeal. When I visited there were people on top of the arch but, given the history of the Blue Window collapsing, I stayed well and truly on firmer ground nearby.
How to get to Wied il Mielah
It requires a bit of effort to get to Gozo’s Wied il Mielah. Either take bus #308 from Victoria and walk for 40 minutes from Pinu or take a Bolt taxi, if you haven’t hired your own car.
Sanap Cliffs, Gozo

The last location on this list of Malta Instagram spots is the Sanap Cliffs on Gozo. I’ve returned to this part of Malta more than once, due to the stunning views of the striped cliffs of Gozo.
The colours change with the light, making the Sanap cliffs an ideal place to visit at sunset.
How to get to the Sanap Cliffs
Bus #306 from Victoria will take you part of the way to the Sanap Cliffs and you’ll have to complete the rest of the trip from Munxar by foot (or book a taxi to take you the whole way).
