Is there Uber in Malta in 2025?

Let’s get right to it and answer that all important question straight away.  The good news is that, yes, Uber is available to use in Malta in 2025. Uber is a popular and convenient way to get around the stunning island of Malta.

Is Uber better than other Malta taxi apps?

Uber isn’t the only taxi app in Malta. You can also download and use Bolt and eCabs to travel around Malta and Gozo.

Bolt and eCabs are similar in that they both offer the option to book in advance as well as book on the spot, which can be useful.  Uber doesn’t offer the option to reserve a ride in advance in Malta.

Both Bolt and eCabs have been established in Malta for longer than Uber and, as such, seem to have more drivers, which means better availability so the taxi may arrive quicker.  Bolt in particular has more drivers on Gozo.

Another advantage of Bolt and eCabs is that they offer the option to pay in cash, which Uber doesn’t, so that may be a deciding factor for you as to which taxi app is best for Malta.

Where does Uber operate in Malta?

Uber operates all over Malta.  Uber also works on Gozo, Malta’s sister island, to the north.  That being said, if you’re trying to get a taxi from some of the popular beaches on Gozo, like Hondoq ir-Rummien you might find drivers less happy to take you if you’re covered in sand and dripping wet.

Whist you can use Uber to get all over Malta, there are better places to stay in Malta without a car than others.

Using Uber to get to Malta International Airport

One of the key journeys I recommend using a taxi service for in Malta is getting to or from the airport.

Whilst there are airport buses (#X1 from north Malta, #X4 from Valletta), in my experience these buses have involved being packed in like sweaty sardines, with luggage piling up all around.

There are also newer airport direct buses, which run every half an hour or every hour to key locations on Malta. They typically run from around 5.30am to around midnight or 1am.

If that getting on a bus with all your luggage doesn’t sound conducive to keeping the stress levels down at the start of your holiday you can take an Uber or taxi or book an airport transfer.

One of the key benefits of booking a private airport transfer, besides the aircon, is that you don’t have to worry about availability of taxis or Ubers, which is a particular stress if you’re arriving at night.

And don’t get me started on the times I’ve found myself wandering around in the dark at an airport trying to find the mysterious spot the Uber is picking up from – not a fun start to a holiday.

With an airport transfer the driver will check your flight for any delays and will be there to greet you on arrival with a board with your name on. Who doesn’t get a kick out of seeing their name held up in the arrivals hall, just like the movies? With prices from only £24, book this highly rated Malta airport transfer.

Alternatively, you could consider hiring a car in Malta, or renting a scooter, which you can arrange to collect from the airport.

Uber Malta price – is it cheaper than Bolt or eCabs?

Malta’s Uber operations started in 2022, which is a lot more recent than in other European destinations like Stockholm, so you might still find that prices are slightly cheaper using Uber Malta.

However, prices on all the taxi apps are dynamic and change according to demand.  So in order to find the cheapest price for your specific journey you’ll need to enter your destination on all the apps at the specific time of travelling and compare the live price.

How does payment work for Uber in Malta?

When you use the Malta Uber app the cost of your journey will be estimated up front.  Payment will be taken automatically by the app at the end of the trip via the electronic payment method you set up.  This can feel strange if you’ve never used a taxi app before and are used to paying the driver in person at the end.

When your journey ends you’ll get an almost immediate email receipt for your payment and it will also be logged in your account on the app.  If you’d like to tip your driver, at the end of the ride you’re given the option to do this via the app by a pop up message.

Can I pay by card using Uber Malta?

You can choose to pay by card using the Uber app.  Other methods of payment within the app include PayPal and Uber gift card.

Can I pay with cash using Uber in Malta?

It’s not possible to pay with cash using Uber in Malta.  You must enter an electronic method of payment in the Uber app when you set up your account. However, you can pay by cash using Bolt in Malta.

Is Malta Uber the only way to take a taxi in Malta?

The short answer as to whether Uber is the only option for taxis in Malta is no.  As well as Uber Malta, both the Bolt and eCabs taxi apps are also popular.

Of course, you don’t have to use a taxi app at all to get a taxi in Malta and Gozo.  There are local licenced Maltese taxis, which are white vehicles.  These taxis can be booked via your accommodation or hailed on the street.

What alternatives are there to taking a taxi in Malta?

Public transport is very good on Malta.  There’s a large bus network which will get you to most of the key sites on Malta (sometimes with a bit of walking involved).

I’ve used it extensively to travel across the islands of Malta and Gozo. There are also great ferry connections between Gozo and Malta.

To get to the famous Blue Lagoon, on Malta’s Comino island, you’ll need to take a ferry to Comino or book a Blue Lagoon boat trip.

There are no trains on Malta, except the fun little tourist train ride in Victoria, Gozo.

You can hire a bike on Malta and Gozo, or hire a boat, both are fun ways to travel during a trip. Scooters and cars are also available to hire on Malta.

One of the benefits to using a taxi app like Uber in any destination is that you don’t have to attempt to badly pronounce your destination to the driver, as it’s all programmed in on the app.

In Malta though you’ll find it even easier if you speak English, as English is an official language of Malta, as well as Maltese.  So pretty much everyone you speak to, including your Maltese taxi driver, will speak to you in English.

It’s a great tour if you’ve got limited time in Malta and want to experience the sister island of Gozo. A buffet lunch with unlimited wine and water is included.

The best part is that you don’t even have to think about how to get to the tour meeting point, as transfers from your accommodation are included. So you can just sit back, relax and enjoy a great day out.

To try a different mode of transport from an Uber, the Valletta Segway Tour and The Malta Experience is a great activity. With consistently 5-star reviews you’re going to love this cool way to travel around Valletta, Malta’s capital city.

See Valletta’s main sights, including St. John’s Co-Cathedral and the Royal Opera House and have fun driving a Segway at the same time. Don’t worry if you’ve never been on a Segway before, the tour includes training and in my own experience you can learn how to use them within about 5 minutes.
