Ramla Bay Gozo: Explore an Iconic Red Sand Beach

Embark on a journey to Ramla Bay, Gozo, where the iconic red sands hold tales of history as well as offering beachside relaxation.  Discovering Ramla’s rich history, from ancient ruins to the enigmatic Ulysses Lodge, sets the stage for a journey to Gozo which goes beyond the ordinary.

With years of independent travel experience, and having adventured all over Gozo on foot and by bike, I’ll offer tips on getting to Ramla Bay and scenic activities to do there.  I’ve included practical insights on the facilities at Rambla Bay, so that you can make the most of your own trip to Gozo.  There’s also bonus information on exploring the hidden nearby cove of Ix-Xtajta beach.

The impressive sight of the sprawling sands of Ramla Bay is unusual on Gozo island, as smaller rocky outcrops, like Hondoq and Wied il-Ghasri, are a more common occurrence.  The large stretch of soft ochre red sand gives Ramla Bay its iconic character.

If a relaxing dip in warm Maltese waters is what you’re looking for then Ramla beach makes a great choice, as it’s been designated a Blue Flag beach, in testament to the quality of the water and the facilities. Don’t miss it off your Gozo itinerary.

The often calm and pristine waters at Gozo’s Ramla Bay provide excellent conditions for swimming and snorkelling.  Although Ramla is one of the most popular beaches on Gozo, its size means that even in summer there’s usually plenty of room, so you’ll have space to find your own spot or spread out and play beach games.

Pro Tip: On busy days, head to the eastern end of Ramla Bay where the crowds thin out. This little-known tip ensures a more peaceful beach day, allowing you to fully enjoy the beauty of the surroundings.

However, there’s more to Ramla Bay than just revitalising waters.  As you stroll along the beach you’ll notice intriguing remnants of Malta’s past, with the weathered ruins of a defensive battery designed to protect Gozo from pirates and dating from the time of the Knights of St John.

Right in the heart of the red sandy expanse, there’s also the unusual sight of a dazzling statue of Our Lady of Hope.  This beach adornment stands as a visual tribute to Malta and Gozo’s high level of religious identification, which the CIA factbook puts at 90% Roman Catholic.  The statue dates from 1881 but has been replaced and restored since.  It’s a treasured feature of Ramla and is now listed as a grade one national monument of Malta.

Ramla beach is set against a beautiful rustic backdrop of wildflowers and sand dunes.  To get some of the best views of the beach, head up to the top, near the mysterious abandoned Ulysses Lodge which sits on the hillside.

Ulysses Lodge

As the name suggests, this place is a run-down ex-accommodation, complete with a derelict pool, so take care if you intend to explore around the lodge itself. Be aware that there are lots of broken shards and other paraphernalia, making it unsuitable for children.  I found the eery quietness made it an unnerving place to be, even in the middle of a bright sunny day.

To experience Ramla Beach, Malta, you first need to get to Malta’s sister island, Gozo.  The ferry to Gozo from Malta runs frequently and there are options from Valletta and the north of Malta.

Ramla Bay is located on the northern coast of Gozo, which is the opposite coast to the ferry harbour at Mgarr.  However, Gozo is a small island, I’ve walked across most of it, so you can still get to Ramla if you’re only on a day trip to Gozo.

Walk or Cycle

Due to Gozo’s compact size and challenging terrain, consider exploring the island on an electric bike (e-bike) rather than a traditional pedal bike. The hills of Gozo can be demanding, and an e-bike provides that extra boost, making your journey more enjoyable.

The route to Ramla from Victoria takes just over an hour of walking and 20 minutes of cycling, and with an e-bike, you’ll be equiped to conquer the hilly landscapes.

Directions:

  • Leave Victoria on Trij il Knisja.
  • Pass through the beautiful village of Xaghra, paying a visit to the neolithic Temples of Ġgantija on the way if you have time.
  • After leaving Xaghra, take the road that leads past Calypso Cave (lock bikes here if cycling), then head down the path, past the abandoned Ulysses Lodge and down onto the beach.  This is a rough and ready route, with a steep descent.
  • For an easier option, take the road out of Xaghra which leads all the way down to the beach on a paved road, although it’s still quite steep.  If taking this route you can lock bikes nearer to the beach.
  • I’ve marked both the harder and the easier options on the map below.

How to Get to Ramla Bay, Gozo, By Bus or Tour

It’s easy to get to Ramla Bay from Mgarr Harbour and from Gozo’s capital, Victoria, as there are buses from both.  There’s a bus stop, called Ramla, five minutes walk from Ramla beach.

  • From Mgarr Harbour take bus #322 to Ramla (17 minutes) then walk 5 minutes, or take bus #301 to Victoria.  The bus stop at the harbour is right in front of the Gozo ferry passenger terminal.
  • From Victoria take bus #302 to Ramla (25 minutes) then walk 5 minutes, or walk the whole way (65 minutes).

For up-to-date bus timetables check the Malta Public Transport website.

Alternatively, you can join one of the day trips in Malta that includes a visit to Ramla Bay.

How to Get to Ramla Bay By Taxi, Car or Scooter

Save Money 728x90

If you’re wondering if you can get to Ramla Bay by taxi, the answer is yes you can.  Uber operates on Malta and Gozo.  Other taxi apps like Bolt and eCabs also work on Gozo.  I’ve found Bolt to be particularly useful on Gozo. Taxi fares cost from around €10.

Renting a car is a popular way to get around GozoDiscover Cars are recommended by many travellers for their competitive prices and the ability to compare so many providers, both local and international, in one place.  Their generous free cancellation policy is also a bonus.

Malta and Gozo are cheaper for car hire compared to some European destinations and have the cheapest fuel in Europe (correct at time of publication).

Another quick way to get to Ramla Bay is to rent a scooter whilst you’re in Malta. You can use it to whizz all over Gozo.

ramla beach

Ramla is one of the best beaches on Gozo if you’re looking for the facilities of an organised beach.  There’s a lifeguard on duty during the peak summer months.

There are also toilets and showers at Ramla Bay, up at the back where the snack bars are.  At the main entrance to the beach, there are usually kiosks selling typical beach wares, hats, toys etc.

Umbrella and Lounger Rental

There’s not a lot of shade to be found at Ramla beach so umbrella and lounger rental are a useful option.

Prices are from €15 for a set, which will be brought to where you want to sit.  However, as the sand is soft and flat it’s easy to bring your towel and stretch out on the red-coloured sand and just rent an umbrella (€5) rather than rent the whole lot.

Where to Eat

You don’t need to bring your own food with you as there are cafes at Ramla Bay.  Plus it has the best selection of ice creams available on Gozo from the ice cream vans parked up by the beach.  The varieties on offer here are fantastic.  I have been known to detour to the beach on a hot summer day just to cool down with one of the refreshing ice lollies.

I recommend trying an ice-cold can of Kinnie whilst at Ramla.  This bitter orange soft drink is unique to Malta.  It’s a bit of an acquired taste but it really hits the spot to quench your thirst under the baking hot Maltese sun.

Local Facilities and Affordable Choices

You can find casual eating options with a view at Ramla’s snack bars. Yet, for those willing to venture beyond the beach in search of provisions, a trip to the nearby village of Xaghra promises an array of fresh delights and snacks from the local restaurants, shops and markets. Latini restaurant on the village square is a wonderful place to eat, with delicious fresh food and a great ambience.

For budget-conscious beachgoers, planning a picnic ahead of your seaside excursion is a savvy move. Make your way to Gozo’s sole outpost of the renowned international supermarket chain, Lidl, conveniently positioned in the capital, Victoria. Here, you’ll find economically priced options, ensuring your essentials are covered for an affordable day at Ramla Bay.

Parking

If you’re travelling by car or motorbike, there’s a parking area right next to Ramla Bay.  This used to be free but recent reports are that it now costs a small fee of a couple of euros.

Ix-Xtajta beach

During my first visit to Ramla Bay, I stumbled upon a hidden gem just beyond the western end of the beach. The sense of exploration and solace from this undiscovered spot added a touch of adventure to my trip.  The place I found is Ix-Xtajta beach, which was deserted.  It’s a pebbly and rocky place but oh so calm.  So, after you’ve spent time at Ramla, head around the coast if you want to discover a perfect retreat for a more private beach experience.

To get your Insta-worthy Malta images, you’ll want to head up the slopes at the eastern end of Ramla to visit Tal-Mixta Cave.  This is an Insta classic hot spot, so expect to see others doing the same.

Head up to the lookout platform at Calypso Cave for more great views out across the bay.  The cave is meant to be the mythical location referred to in Homer’s The Odyssey.  Sadly, you can’t visit the cave itself anymore since it collapsed.

If you’re seeking a different perspective of Gozo than just relaxing on the beach, head out for a hike on the scenic walking paths along the cliffs next to Ramla, at the western end.

To go further afield and explore some other Gozo beaches, check out nearby San Blas beach and the less well-known Dahlet Qorrot – another of Gozo’s gems.

For a more unusual activity, if you’re visiting Gozo in June, check out the annual Fig Festival in the nearby village of Xaghra.  The fig is a popular fruit and Xaghra celebrates the harvest with music, food and drink.

With spa treatments, heated pools, a gym, tennis courts and alfresco dining, every moment is an opulent escape at the Kempinski.

I’ve created a map that shows the location of Ramla Bay and Ix-Xtajta beach.  I’ve also marked the location of the nearest bus stop, the parking area and the two walking routes from Xaghra.  Click the arrow icon to the left of the map heading to view the names of each of the places marked.

A trip to Ramla Bay is a must-do activity for any Gozo and Malta trip itinerary.  This classic beach is a great place to relax and offers a slice of Maltese history accompanied by natural wonders.  Gozo is a wonderful place to spend a few days, with so much to offer, from hikes along the Gozo coast to fabulous swimming spots.
