Malta offers a brilliant blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. The opportunities for memorable adventures together, combined with romantic relaxation, make it an ideal destination for couples.

History

The story of Malta is wrapped up in both an ancient and more modern history, and it has the Megalithic temples still to show for it.  The country played an important strategic role in World War Two and was heavily bombed.

Due to the millennia of history, there are loads of historic sites and museums to explore together. Learning about places like the Ħaġar Qim temples or the fortified city of Mdina sparks plenty of interesting conversations with your partner. We found the underground air raid shelters at the Malta at War Museum particularly fascinating.

Culture

Malta has loads of great museums, from large military history ones to quirky unique venues dedicated to specific aspects of Maltese life.

One of our favourite places to visit was the windmill on Gozo that explains the vital role bread and grain held in the history of Malta. Plus, the whole of the capital of Valletta has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site – ideal for wandering hand in hand with your other half.

Food

The varied cuisine in Malta has been influenced by the range of cultures that have at one time controlled Malta or played a part in its history.

You can expect to find delicious Italian, Mediterranean, Arabic and even some English influences.

There are plenty of places to enjoy romantic meals, sharing traditional dishes like rabbit stew or fresh seafood.

Architecture

The island’s impressive architecture, from grand churches like St Johns Co-Cathedral to the numerous village chapels, provides picturesque settings for couples to explore and great back drops for those all important couples selfies together.

Beaches

Boasting some of the bluest water in the Mediterranean, Malta is perfect for couples seeking relaxation or adventure. You can spend days sunbathing on golden sands or discovering Malta and Gozo’s romantic hidden coves.

Hiking

The rugged terrain of Malta means you can enjoy a variety of hikes, from gentle coastal walks to more challenging and rocky trails.

Couples can enjoy quality time together while taking in breathtaking views and discovering secluded spots.

We loved hiking across every corner of Gozo, with just each other and the rolling hills for company.

Reasons to visit Malta

Size of Malta

Malta is located in the heart of the Mediterranean and is only 316 square km in size.

This means it’s a great option as an island holiday destination.  In fact, Malta is made up of three main islands, Gozo, Comino and Malta.

The petite size of Malta means you can get out and explore different parts of the island in a small amount of time.  However, there is so much to see and do in Malta and Gozo that you won’t get bored.

If you want to hire a car and drive around Malta, its compact nature means that you can explore the entire island with ease. It’s possible to visit multiple sites in a single day without feeling rushed.

Language

Many travellers like to learn a few phrases in a new language when they visit a destination, whilst others feel more confident somewhere where English is spoken.

One of the many reasons why Malta is worth visiting is that you whatever your preference, you’ll be covered, as Malta has two official languages, Maltese and English.

So if speaking English is a key factor for you in deciding on your next holiday destination, travelling to Malta will be a good choice.

The mild climate

Malta has a year-round mild climate and loads of sunshine.  However, it does get cooler in winter and there are rainy days.

Summer

The temperature rises in summer in Malta and it gets very hot in the peak months of July and August, with plenty of sunshine.

Spring and Autumn

The shoulder seasons of spring and summer are quieter in Malta, and the temperature is not at the peak of July and August’s blistering highs.  The water is warm enough to swim in at one of Malta’s many swimming spotsIt’s an ideal time of year to visit Malta.

Travelling around Malta is easy.  There’s a reliable bus service, which will get you to the main attractions. Bus tickets are affordable, at only €2.50 per journey and each ticket is valid for two hours on any bus.

In addition to buses, walking and cycling are great options for exploring the islands as a couple. And if you want to really travel in style, you can take a boat.  For more details, check out my article on Getting Around Malta By Public Transport.

Car hire is cheaper on Malta than in many European countries and the small size of the islands means that most journeys are short.  You can also hire a scooter for even more flexibility.

Gozo is one of my favourite places in Malta.  It offers a more laid-back and romantic atmosphere than the island of Malta, with stretches of countryside to explore.

There are plenty of hiking routes on Gozo, perfect for a romantic stroll.

In fact, I loved our laidback trips to Gozo so much that I’d go so far as to say that the island is the best place to go in Malta for couples.

sunset sanap cliffs
Gozo’s coastal cliffs

Malta’s rugged landscape and coastal paths provide excellent opportunities for hikers.  We’ve hiked all over Gozo and recommend exploring as much of the island by foot as you can for a romantic slow travel experience.

The Dingli Cliffs offer some of the most spectacular views in Malta. They’re the highest point on the island, and walking here provides you with the calming influence of the natural habitat of Malta.  This area is perfect for a relaxing hike and picnic whilst taking in the beauty of your surroundings.

We also enjoyed hiking part of the less well-known route of the Victoria Lines, sometimes referred to as the ‘Great Wall of Malta.’  This historical fortification stretches out across the island and navigating the route together provides a unique hiking experience where you get a sense of Malta’s rich history.

For a coastal hike on Gozo, don’t miss the Sanap Cliffs.  This breathtaking trail takes you along awesome, hair-raising cliffs to Xlendi Grotto at Xlendi Bay. The clear, blue waters are perfect for a refreshing swim together after your hike.

Mellieha Bay, Malta’s largest sandy beach, is popular for a relaxed day by the sea.  However, it’s not my favourite, as I think there are far more beautiful beaches on Gozo and Malta.

For a more secluded experience, head to Wied il-Ghasri on Gozo. It’s a small inlet, perfect for floating around in.

Take a day trip

There are lots of options for day trips on Malta.  You can even visit Sicily for the day, so you can combine a trip to Malta with a hop over to Italy, for added romantic value.  Here are three highly rated day trips:

  1. Thank you Katie. Some great tips there. Personally my preference would be to stay in cities protected from aggressive development by virtue of their history such as Mdina, Rabat, Valletta, Senglea, Birgu etc, although Valletta is being overdeveloped despite this unfortunately and can be overwhelmingly noisy at times. This is not to say it’s not a super beautiful city. Next time you’re in Malta, perhaps you give us a call to meet over coffee.
