Comino ferry routes
Ferries to Comino depart from both Malta and its sister island of Gozo. Gozo is one of the most beautiful parts of the country of Malta and I recommend you spend time there exploring the countryside and natural Gozo beaches as part of any Malta trip itinerary.
Ferry to Comino from Malta

The ferry to Comino from Malta departs from two locations, both in the north of Malta. These are Cirkewwa ferry terminal and Marfa. The massive car ferry to Gozo also leaves from Cirkewwa.
Buses #41 and #42 from Valletta stop at Cirkewwa harbour so it’s a good choice to depart from here if you’re arriving by bus.
If you’re hiring a car on Malta, there is limited parking at Cirkewwa and it might be easier to find a parking spot at nearby Marfa. The ferry from Marfa to Comino leaves from opposite the Riviera Resort hotel.
Ferry to Comino from Gozo

To get the ferry to Comino from Gozo, head to the main harbour on Gozo, Mgarr. Frequent ferries will whisk you over to the stunning island of Comino in no time.
Comino Ferry companies
Four companies run the ferries to Comino. They are:
Malta ferry to Comino
Gozo ferry to Comino
Ferry to Comino from Sliema and Bugibba
In addition to the regular ferries to Comino, there is also a hop on hop off boat which leaves from Sliema and then Buggiba.
If you’ve got limited time in Malta and want to maximise your time and still travel independently, this is a convenient way to visit the islands of Comino and Gozo in a full day.
Ferry to Comino from Valletta

Sadly, there is not a direct ferry from Valletta to Comino. However, you can take the bus to Cirkewwa and catch the ferry from there. Or hire scooter in Malta and park it whilst you head over to Comino (you can’t take a scooter on the ferry).
Alternatively, take the fast ferry to Gozo from Valletta (journey time is 45 minutes), spend some time there and then head over to Comino.
price of the Comino ferry
If you’re wondering how much it will cost you to get to the stunning Blue Lagoon and Comino, the good news is that tickets are not expensive.
- Price of a return ticket on the ferry that departs from Gozo is from €7.
- The cost of a return ticket on the ferry leaving from Malta is from €12 for adults and €5 for children.
For an even more fun day out, book one of the Blue Lagoon boat trips, many of which don’t cost much more than the ferry and will take you to see other parts of Comino, like the caves. Another benefit of a boat trip is that they depart from a range of locations, like St. Julian’s, Bugibba and Sliema.
Did you know? If you ned to get somewhere quickly, you can take an Uber in Malta and Gozo.
Ferry to Comino tickets
I recommend buying your ferry tickets for your trip to Comino in advance, as this is a very popular activity on Malta. Buy tickets online or go in person to get them at Mgarr Harbour and Cirkewwa Harbour.
Whilst it might be possible to buy them on the day you want to travel, if you’ve got limited time in Malta and Gozo, you run the risk of them not having any places left in peak summer season.
Schedule for the Comino ferry
You’ll want to make the most of your time on Comino and at the Blue Lagoon. Fortunately, there are plenty of ferries that make the trip.
The ferry from Malta to Comino runs daily every half an hour throughout the year and there are extra trips during summer.
There are also daily ferries from Gozo to Comino, leaving at least every hour.
First departures and last return trips are usually at 8am and 6pm respectively but do check the ferry company schedules before travelling for the up-to-date details.
Pro Tip: the Blue Lagoon on Comino is super popular. Get there on the first ferry if you want a chance of enjoying it without so many people.
How long is the ferry Ride?
- Gozo to Comino journey time by ferry = 15 minutes.
- Cirkewwa to Comino ferry journey time = 25 minutes
What’s it like on the ferry?

Having used the ferry to Comino multiple times, I’ve found it to be a convenient and economical way to experience a trip to the Blue Lagoon. However, it can be a bit hectic trying to get the return ferry back in peak summer.
The journey is quick and if you sit at the back like I’ve done, you will likely get wet from the sea spray. The Comino ferries are small boats, not great big car ferries, so there aren’t any toilets or food outlets onboard.
It’s fun to sit back and watch the landscape rush by as you head over to Comino. On one memorable boat trip this included the bizarre sight of a horse swimming through the water in Mgarr harbour.
The return ferry from Comino to Malta or Gozo can seem like a free for all when it’s busy (which is all of summer), so if you’re travelling then you might want to consider booking one of the boat trips instead. Or at least making sure you don’t leave it until the stress of the last ferry boat to head back.
Other ways of getting to Comino
As well as the ferry there are several other ways to get to Comino.
You can book a fabulous boat trip to Comino. There are various departure points for these trips so you should be able to find a trip that suits you.
If there’s a few of you why not get a private boat charter. This works out as good value and you have the freedom to make your own itinerary.
For something a little more adventurous, book a kayak trip over from Gozo to Comino. This is a unique way to experience Comino and you’ll get to explore other parts of the island on your excursion.

What to do on Comino Island

A visit to Comino is one of the best day trips in Malta. Whilst the Blue Lagoon is what draws most people to the island, there are plenty more things see and do on Comino.
