Wied il-Ghasri Beach, Gozo, Malta: The Complete Guide

Wied il-Ghasri is an incredible find on Gozo, Malta.  This rocky inlet is an unspoilt slice of nature which cuts through the arid land of Gozo and out to join the glistening deep blue sea.  If you’re searching for an off-the-beaten-path place to swim on your trip to Malta, then Wied il-Ghasri beach is it.  The aquamarine colour of the water here is something to behold, as is gazing up at the peaceful valley around you.

As a frequent traveller who’s traversed the island to explore the very best of Gozo’s beaches and bays on my trips to Malta, let me guide you through all the key details of Wied il-Ghasri (also spelt Wied il-Għasri).  I’ve included information on how to get to the beach, what it’s like when you get there and parking.  There are also details on nearby places to visit and things to do on Gozo.  So, let’s dive into this comprehensive guide and uncover the beauty of Wied il-Ghasri.

View of Wied il-Għasri, Malta

Wied il-Ghasri might not meet everyone’s definition of a beach.  It’s more of a wild swimming paradise and a uniquely beautiful spot in Malta.  It’s one of the best Instagram spots on Gozo. If that sounds like your kind of place, make sure to include it in your Gozo itinerary.

A natural formation of tall rocks surrounds a narrow valley and sliver of turquoise water.  The view from above, before you descend to the bay, is one worth taking some time to admire.

Once you descend the steps cut into the rocks, you’ll be searching for somewhere to set up camp.  You might spot people sunbathing on the roof of the derelict building at the start of the canyon and I’ve also managed to scramble up and find places to perch on the cliff sides.  Other than that, there’s not a lot of room to stretch out, so bring minimal stuff with you (although don’t forget water and food).

gozo wied il ghasri

The peaceful ambience at Wied il-Ghasri valley, as the sea curves its way out from the high-sided gorge, makes it a must-visit spot on your Malta itinerary.

Although Wied il-Ghasri is off-the-beaten-path, its small size means that it doesn’t take a lot of visitors to make it feel busy.  Come later in the afternoon, or early morning, if you don’t want to share this piece of paradise with so many other visitors.

Look out for snorkellers and divers – diving is a popular activity on Gozo and Wied il-Ghasri is no exception, as it offers underwater caves for experienced divers to explore.

If you’re looking for a beach with facilities, watersports and a great view out to Comino Island, head over to Hondoq ir-Rummien bay on the southwest tip of Gozo instead.

Pro Tip: Bring water shoes – you’ll need them to get into the sea here.

The effort it takes to get to Wied il-Ghasri is rewarded by the prospect of the inimitable experience of enjoying a dip in the gorgeous blue sea below.

To get here, you first need to take a ferry from Malta to Gozo island.  Ferries are frequent and leave from Malta’s capital, Valletta, and Ċirkewwa in the north of Malta. Once on Gozo, there are several ways to reach the valley.

Walk or Cycle

Hiking on Gozo or cycling are the best ways to get out and really see the island.  A walk or bike ride to Wied il-Ghasri makes for a great day out.

Starting out from Victoria, the capital of Gozo, you can reach Wied il-Ghasri in a little over an hour’s walk (20 minutes by bike).

  • To start, head north towards the coast, along Triq L Imghallem out of Victoria.
  • Pass through the lovely village of Żebbuġ, where you’ll get incredible views out across the Gozo landscape.
  • As you’re leaving the village, take Triq Is-Sagħtrija and follow the sign for Wied il-Għasri, off to the left, where you’ll double back on yourself and then continue along the same road.
  • When you reach the T-junction turn right, still on Triq Is-Sagħtrija and then take the first left onto an unmarked road. This will lead you all the way to Wied il-Ghasri.

Once you’ve finished admiring the snaking curve of the gorge from above, a set of stairs leads down to the enticing water below.  Remember to reserve some energy for the climb back up after you’ve finished splashing about in the shimmering sea.

This is the direct route from Victoria.  However, you can also take a scenic detour from Żebbuġ, adding an extra 40 minutes to your walk, to visit the nearby salt pans, Salinas de Qolla I-Bajda.  Leave Żebbuġ via Triq Għajn Mhelhel and go north until you reach the sea and the salt pans next to Xwejni Bay.  It’s fascinating to explore the forms of these traditional coastal features.

From the Salinas de Qolla I-Bajda, to get to Wied il-Ghasri, head west along the coast until the road, Triq Is-Saghtrija, heads inland.  Take a right turn down a track just before Triq Is-Saghtrija joins the road Wied il-Ghasri.

Bus or Tour

There isn’t a direct bus that will take you all the way.  However, you can get close by bus and then walk the last bit.

  • From Mgarr Harbour, take bus #301 or #303 to Victoria (15 minutes) and change at Victoria.
  • From Victoria, take bus #309 to Onici stop in Żebbuġ village (15 minutes) then follow the walking instructions above from Żebbuġ for 20 minutes until you reach Wied il-Ghasri.
  • Check the latest bus timetables at the Malta Public Transport website.
  • Alternatively, join one of the day trips in Malta that includes a visit to Wied il-Ghasri.

How To Get To Wied il-Għasri By Taxi, Car or Scooter

Uber operates in Malta and Gozo so you can reach Wied il-Ghasri by taxi.  In addition to Uber, I’ve found the taxi app Bolt useful on my trips around Gozo.

Hiring a car is also an option for getting around Gozo.  Discover Cars are recommended by many travellers for the ability to compare rates across so many rental companies in one place and their excellent cancellation policy. Car hire in Malta and Gozo is cheaper than in many other European destinations.  A free parking area is available at Wied il-Ghasri.

Another quick way to get here is to rent a scooter whilst you’re in Gozo. You can use it to quickly get to Gozo’s main sights and hidden gems.

canyon cave

There is a small run-down building above the entrance to the water that smells as though it’s being used as an informal toilet for visitors, I don’t recommend it.  So be aware that there are no toilets at Wied il-Ghasri and plan your visit accordingly.

There are no facilities at all here and you’re a long way from help if you get into trouble so assess your own risk.  I personally have enjoyed wonderful times floating on the sea here, but the pull of the water can get rough and isn’t for everyone.  Even if you don’t want to swim at Wied il-Ghasri, the views of the location itself make it worth a visit.

Umbrella and Lounger Rental

There is no umbrella or lounger rental at Wied il-Ghasri, as this is a wild and rugged swimming spot.  Whilst there is a very small pebbly beach, there is no room for loungers.

Where to Eat

As this is a wild beach there are no food or drink outlets here, so you’ll need to bring plenty of water and any food you want with you.

Parking at Wied il-Ghasri

Although Wied il-Għasri has the feel of being in the middle of nowhere, there is a small free parking area.  I’ve marked it on the map below.  Cars also use the road nearby to park up on.
