Pisa to Piombino

There are two main ways to get from Pisa to Piombino. If you travel without a car, you can reach Piombino by train. Alternatively, if you drive, you can hire a car and make the journey yourself.
Pisa to Piombino by Train

There are plenty of things to do in Piombino, including a vast archaeological park, natural beaches and Roman and Etruscan ruins. So, whilst it may be better known as a departure point for ferries from Piombino to Elba, it’s worth spending time in the town itself.
The journey time from Pisa to Piombino is from around one hour and twenty minutes on the direct train.
Train Station in Pisa
The main train station in Pisa is called Pisa Centrale. This is where you catch the train to Piombino. The station is large, with regional and local trains departing from a multitude of platforms. Screens in the lobby area clearly show train departures and platform numbers. There is a staffed ticket office where you can ask for help. However, queues can be long so save yourself time and get your train tickets in advance.
It’s easy to get to Pisa Centrale station from Pisa airport. There’s a dedicated train, the Pisa Mover, that runs frequently from the airport. It takes five minutes to arrive at Pisa Centrale train station.
A single ticket for the Pisa Mover costs €5, a return is €10. Buy tickets the from machines at the airport or in advance online. The Pisa Mover trains have their own platforms at Pisa Centrale so you’ll need to walk through the train station, via the subway under the station, to get to the main ticket office and other platforms.
Typically, three direct trains run daily from Pisa Centrale to Piombino and Piombino Marittima. In addition, there are several indirect trains, which require a change of train at Campiglia Marittima.
Train Stations in Piombino

There are two train stations in Piombino to choose from. The main Piombino station is located in the centre of town on Piazza Ferruccio Niccolini. This is the station to head to from Pisa if you want to explore Piombino.
The other train station in Piombino is ideal if you’re travelling from Pisa to Piombino in order to travel onwards to the island of Elba, as the station is located at the Piombino port (Piombino Marittima). The port in Piombino is large, so make sure to leave yourself enough time to locate the correct pier for your ferry once you get off the train.
I also recommend you buy your ferry tickets in advance, so you don’t have to spend time going all the way to the ticket sales windows in the terminal building and queuing up before heading to the piers.

The nearest station to the Piombino ferry port is Piombino Marittima. This station is situated next to Piombino ferry port. Cross over the road and you’re at the port.

The direct train usually runs three times a day. These three regional trains also continue on to Piombino Marittima. In addition, there are several indirect services.
First and Last Train Departures
The earliest fast train departs from Pisa at 6.37 am and arrives at Piombino at 7.56 am and Piombino Marittima at 8.10 am (weekend times vary).
The last train leaves at 4.32 pm and arrives in Piombino at 6.16 pm and 6.31 pm at Piombino Marittima (weekend times vary).
Times can change so check the trainline website for up-to-date timetables before you travel.
What is the Train Journey from Pisa to Piombino Like?
The train journey from Pisa to Piombino on the fast train is a pleasant one. Trains are large, some with two decks, so you can choose to sit up or down stairs. There were plenty of seats on my journeys. Seats are spacious and comfortable with plug sockets (European) and some with tables. There are toilets on board.
The Italian countryside rushes by as you travel south. If you’re travelling on the indirect train you’ll need to change trains at Campiglia Marittima station, which is 20 minutes from Piombino ferry port.

If you miss the connecting train at Campiglia Marittima, as I did due to a delay, there is a bus stop on the right-hand side as you exit the station. Bus #2A goes from Campiglia Marittima to Piombino and the Piombino port. You can buy tickets on the bus (cash only). The cost of a single trip is €4 per person. Journey time is 20 minutes, and the bus stops outside the ferry port terminal building.
There are also taxis waiting outside at Campiglia Marittima station, if there is a long wait for the next bus.
Can You Take Luggage On Board?
You can take your luggage on board the train at no extra cost. There are luggage racks where you can place large luggage and smaller luggage can be placed on the floor under your seat.

There are currently no direct coaches which travel from Pisa to Piombino.

You can travel from Pisa to Piombino by car. The distance is 110 km (68 miles) according to Google Maps.
