How to get to and from the airport in Montenegro
One of the key queries about getting around Montenegro is how to get from the airport to the centre.
There are two international airports in Montenegro, Podgorica and Tivat.
Podgorica is the capital of Montenegro and Tivat is very close to the popular destinations of Kotor and Perast (and even the neighbouring country of Dubrovnik).
As there is no Uber in Montenegro, you won’t be able to take an Uber from the airport to your accommodation. However, there are a few transport options you can use to make the trip from the airports.
Private airport transfer
You can book a private airport transfer in advance. This is a convenient and stress-free option for journeys to and from both Podgorica and Tivat airports in Montenegro.
A driver will meet you on arrival, with your name displayed, and take you to your transfer vehicle. When you’re tired from travelling, this direct service is a great way to start your trip.
A pre-booked transfer means you can budget for the cost in advance and avoid the hassle of bargaining over taxi prices in a language that’s not your own.
Airport transfer costs are very reasonable in Montenegro with Kiwitaxi, so for maximum convenience this is a great option in Montenegro.
Bus to and from Tivat Airport to Kotor

Whilst there is a bus that runs the Tivat to Kotor route, unfortunately the stop at the airport is not particularly convenient as you have to walk around 200m with your luggage. There are also mixed reports of whether or not the buses will stop there, or only at the bigger Tivat bus station 1.5 km away on the road to Tivat town.
Bus to and from Pogdorica Airport
Buses run frequently from outside Podgorica airport to the bus station in Podgorica centre. Several different companies serve the route.
The cost of the bus ticket from Pogdorica airport to the city is 2- 3 euros one way, depending on the operator. Check times on the busticket4.me website.
Podgorica bus station is next to the train station, so it’s easy to get onward travel to other places in Montenegro like the beautiful Durmitor National Park. The bus station itself is a little sparse, there are toilets, but I found them to be not the nicest.
Airport taxis in Montenegro
Along with pre-arranged transfers, taxis are a good option for getting to and from Podgorica and Tivat airports. Be aware that they might be under high demand at the time you’re travelling.
Taxi from Kotor to Tivat airport
Although the journey time from Kotor to Tivat airport by taxi is short, at only 15 minutes, make sure to allow at least double that time for the trip, as traffic in and around Kotor can come to an almost standstill at peak times and you don’t want the stress of running late for your flight.
On one of my taxi trips in Kotor we were stuck in the tunnel outside of town for what seemed like an age.
The cost of the airport taxi should be around 25 to 30 euros. I used Red Taxi when I was in Kotor and boked via WhatsApp.
Taxi from Podgorica airport to the centre
The journey time from the airport in Podgorica to the city centre is also around 15 minutes by taxi.
You can book a taxi for €15 from Go Montenegro.
Hire car
If you want to have maximum convenience when travelling in Montenegro, you can hire a car from Discover Cars. They have good cancellation terms and you can search and compare different providers in once place.
Getting around Montenegro – transport options
I used many different transport options when I visited Montenegro. Here are all the details from my experience.
Montenegro by bus

There are both local buses and long distance buses in Montenegro. For example, to get around Kotor you can use the local Blueline buses.
I used both local and long distance buses to get around Montenegro. I found the long distance buses to be a very cheap and practical way to explore. For example, I used them to visit Budva and the iconic Black Lake.
The actual buses ranged from those that were on time, clean and spacious, to some that were late, overcrowded and uncomfortable.
Despite some less than ideal journeys, if you go with an attitude of being prepared to have to wait a bit, buses are a budget-friendly way to make the most of the wonderful landscape of Montenegro.

Train travel in Montenegro

There are two main train lines in Montenegro. One runs from Bar, on the coast, all the way to Belgrade in Serbia, via the capital, Podgorica. The other line goes from Podgorica to Nikšić.
When I stayed in Budva I took a bus to Sutomore and from there I picked up the train to Virpazar and Podgorica.
I didn’t have long to make that connection and ran so fast I felt sick. In the end, I needn’t have bothered as the massive train waited for ten minutes at the station before creaking back to life.
It was a brilliant experience riding such a huge, old train. The station staff were friendly, as were the locals who helped point me in the direction of the station when I’d taken a wrong turn.
The main benefit of taking the train, apart from it being a fun way to travel, is that the tickets are ridiculously cheap. It costs a few euros to do an hour’s journey. Much cheaper than my local trains from Cambridge to London.
Find up to date timetables for trains in Montenegro on the Railway of Montenego website.
Pro tip: train stations that I visited in Montenegro didn’t have any facilities (unless you count stray cats) so bring your own snacks and water. The train toilets were also pretty grim.
Taxi
I used taxis several times in Montenegro, when the train or bus wasn’t a convenient option. The taxis were fast, reliable and reasonably priced.
When travelling around Montenegro by public transport, it can be worth a little splurge to get you from A to B, as the other transport options are so well priced that your overall transport costs are low.
Taxi operators vary from city to city. Some of the key ones are:
- Budva – Terrae Taxi
- Kotor – Red Taxi
- Podgorica – Red Taxi
Ferry and boats

As well as trains, buses and taxis, there are several places in Montenegro where you’ll have the opportunity to travel by boat. I used the ferry to get from Dubrovnik to Montenegro, arriving in Budva. This was a much better way to make this journey for me than the bus and meant I got to see two countries in one trip.
If you’re flying in to Tivat first on your Montenegro trip, check out my guide for how to get from Tivat Airport to Budva.
Along with arriving in Montenegro, other places to consider boat trips are to naviagate around Kotor Bay and at the sublime Lake Skadar (from Virpazar).
Car hire in Montenegro
To drive yourself around Montenegro, compare car hire prices on Discover Cars.
As well as all of the above choices for transport in Montenegro, you can also hire bikes, go on excellent nature hikes and even take a modern cable car in Kotor to get around.
