Is Uber Madrid better than other taxi apps in Madrid?
Whilst Uber may be one of the most well-known taxi apps internationally, particularly for US and UK visitors, there are other taxi apps available to use in Madrid.Â
I found the Cabify and Bolt apps useful on trips to Madrid and both are popular taxi apps in Madrid.
Uber and these two other main taxi apps in Madrid are very similar. All three offer the option to reserve a taxi in advance as well as book on the spot, which can be very handy.
Cabify is a Spanish taxi company and was founded in Madrid in 2011, so it’s very well established in Spain. Along with Madrid, Cabify currently offers taxis throughout 10 other cities in Spain.Â
Due to Cabify’s duration in Madrid, they have better availability and are more popular than Uber. In addition, when I’ve used Cabify I’ve been sent various offers via the app, which meant I got a great deal on my taxi price.
The price of Cabify and Bolt taxis in Madrid can work out cheaper than Uber due to the difference in their charging models. When comparing prices, I often find that they’re both cheaper than Uber.
In comparison to Cabify, Bolt has a much wider international reach, as it’s established in more than 45 countries.
Uber in Madrid does offer a good range of vehicles for travel, including:
- Three types of premium cars: Uber Black, Van and Comfort
- Economy options: Uber Green, X and Share
- Fixed price trips to and from the station: Uber Metropolitano
- Uber pet and Uber kids (cars with baby seats)
I have personally found Bolt and Cabify to be more convenient apps to use for taxis in Madrid, with Uber as a useful back up.
Using Uber from Madrid International Airport to City Centre
The nearest airport to Madrid is called Aeropuerto Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas (MAD). A Madrid airport taxi to the city centre takes approximately 20 minutes with no traffic. It can take double that or more if travelling at rush hour.
The close location of Madrid airport to the city centre makes a short 2-day break in Madrid very easy to do. There’s so much to see in Madrid. I love visiting the world-class museums and galleries in Madrid, many of which are free.
Whilst Uber in Madrid can be a convenient way to get around the city, the journey from Madrid airport to Madrid city centre is not one that I suggest making by Uber. There are other cheaper and more reliable ways to get to the city centre.
I’ve had the unfortunate experience of being unable to get an Uber from Madrid airport on arrival. This is a frustrating way to start a trip, so consider avoiding Madrid airport Uber and using one of the alternative methods for getting into Madrid instead.
Private transfer from Madrid Airport to City Centre
If time is of the essence and you don’t fancy risking being left hanging around at the airport, or there’s a few of you, book an airport transfer for a fast and convenient way to arrive in Madrid.
With a private airport transfer you don’t have to deal with any stress of public transport, worry about availability of taxis or think about the possibility of a a delayed flight meaning no transport will be available.
Instead, a private airport transfer driver will check your flight for delays and will be there to greet you on arrival with a board with your name on, which is a wonderfully stress-free way to arrive in Madrid. With prices from £42 for 2 people, book this highly rated Madrid airport transfer.
Alternatives to Uber to get from Madrid Airport to the City Centre

There are a range of ways of getting from Madrid airport to the city centre including metro, taxi app, official taxi, bus and private transfer.
Metro from Madrid Airport
One of the more affordable ways to get from Madrid airport to the city centre is to take the Madrid metro. There are two dedicated stops for the Madrid metro at the airport, one at terminal 4 and one for terminals 1, 2 and 3. Look for the pink line 8 on the Madrid metro map.
The airport metro line runs frequently from 6 am to 1.30 am, including on public holidays. The metro stop is a long walk from the arrivals terminal so keep that in mind when deciding which transport option to use.Â
Depending on where you’re staying in Madrid, you may need to make a transfer on the metro, as the last stop on the airport metro line is Nuevos Ministerios. From here you can get the blue line 10 in the direction of Puerta del Sol and reach more central areas such as Plaza de Espana.
A one-way ticket by metro from Madrid airport costs €5. Be aware that to use the metro in Madrid you need to first get a re-loadable Multi Card from one of the ticket machines or booths. These cost €2.50 so if you don’t have one from a previous trip, your first trip via metro from Madrid airport will cost €7.50.
Madrid Airport train to City Centre

As well as the metro, there are two local trains, called Cercanias, which run from Madrid airport to various stops including Atocha, near Parque El Retiro in central Madrid. The station for both is at terminal 4 of the airport, on floor -1.Â
The journey from Madrid airport to Atocha via train takes half an hour. Trains run approximately every 25 minutes between 5.55 am and midnight (check times on the Spanish RENFE trains website before you travel as they are subject to change). A one-way ticket to Atocha costs €2.60, so this is a very cheap option if you’re staying near to Atocha or one of the other train stops.Â
Express bus Madrid Airport
An alternative to the trains is to take the dedicated Madrid airport express bus into the city centre. The advantage of the bus is that it runs 24 hours a day.Â
There are stops at terminals 1, 2 and 4 at the airport. A one-way ticket for the bus costs €5 and journey time is approximately 30 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic. Look for a bus with 203 Exprés Aeropuerto written on it, or N27 Exprés Aeropuerto if travelling at night.
Madrid Airport taxi to City Centre
It’s very easy to find an official taxi at Madrid airport as there are marked taxi ranks and the official taxis are all white, with a red stripe. However, the queue has been long when I’ve arrived at Madrid airport so if you don’t want to wait this might not be the best option for you.
Cost of taxi from Madrid Airport to City Centre
The official white taxis at Madrid airport charge a fee of €33 if your destination is within the M30 motorway that circles the centre of Madrid.
If your journey is outside the M30 area and is less than 9.km, the minimum fare will be €22. So it’s expensive to get an airport taxi in Madrid.Â
If you’re on a budget, avoid taking one of the official taxis and consider using the Cabify taxi app (which has a cheaper minimum airport pick up fee of €12.50) or one of the other methods of transport for the Madrid airport journey.Â
What alternatives are there to taking a taxi in Madrid?

The metro is very convenient and will help you get to all the key tourist places and most Instagrammable places in Madrid.
If you fancy a more fun way to travel in Madrid, book one of the excellent Madrid Segway tours. Alternatively, you could grab a ticket for the super convenient Hop on Hop Off Bus and see all the highlights.
You can also hop on a classic vintage bike tour around Madrid or enjoy an extra special day out with a Madrid hot air balloon ride.
Uber in Madrid price
Madrid’s Uber operations have not been running as long as Cabify, or indeed for as long as Uber has been running in other European destinations, but I have found the price in Madrid to be more expensive than Cabify and Bolt.
However, prices on taxi apps are dynamic and change according to demand. To find the cheapest price for your specific Madrid journey you’ll need to enter your destination in the apps for Uber, Cabify and Bolt at the time of travelling and compare the live price.
How does payment work for Uber in Madrid?
When you use the Uber Madrid app the cost of your journey will be estimated up front. The app will automatically take payment at the end of the trip via the electronic payment method you set up when you first set up your Uber account.
This can feel a little odd if you’ve never used a taxi app before and are used to paying a taxi driver in person at the end of the ride. However, rest assured, you can see all your journeys in the Uber app and you’ll get an email receipt for your payment.
Is the tip included in the Uber Madrid fare?
The tip for your Uber taxi ride isn’t included in the fare. If you’d like to tip the driver, you’re given the option to do this at the end of the journey via the app.
Can I pay by card using Uber Madrid?
You can choose to pay by card for your Uber in Madrid by entering your card details as a payment method in the app before you travel. Other methods of payment within the app include PayPal and Uber gift card.
Can I pay with cash using Uber in Madrid?
It’s not possible to pay with cash using Uber in Madrid. You need to enter an electronic method of payment when you create your account in the Uber app.
Is Madrid Uber the only way to take a Madrid taxi?
Uber is not the only way to take a Madrid taxi. Along with Uber Madrid you can also use Cabify, which is a popular Spanish taxi app with lots of drivers, and Bolt.
Of course, you don’t have to use a taxi app at all to get a Madrid taxi. There are local licenced Madrid taxis, which are white vehicles with a red stripe. These taxis can be booked via your accommodation, found at taxi ranks throughout Madrid or hailed on the street.
Is there Uber in Spain?
Uber operates in lots of cities in Spain, as well as Madrid. For example, you can get an Uber in Valencia and an Uber in Bilbao. There is also Uber in Barcelona, Uber Alicante and Uber Malaga, to name a few. Once you open the Uber app in Spain you will be able to see if there are Uber taxis operating in your specific location.
However, the operation of Uber in Spain has not been without its issues, particularly in Barcelona, and as such, the Spanish taxi app Cabify is more common (and in my experience cheaper) in Spain than Uber.
Do I need to speak Spanish to use Uber in Madrid?
Ordering a taxi in Madrid using an app like Uber means that you don’t need to speak Spanish, as you programme in all the details of your trip directly in the app.
Madrid is an international city and many people in Spain and Madrid speak English as well as Spanish so you may also be able to communicate with the driver in English if you don’t speak Spanish.
A few useful Spanish phrases for taking a taxi in Madrid
The Spanish word for taxi is easy to remember as it’s also ‘taxi’.
A taxi driver is called a ‘taxista’.
Say ‘para aqui donde usted puede por favor’, to ask a taxi to stop, where they can.
To tell your driver thank you and that they have been very kind, for example if they have helped you with your luggage, you can say ‘gracias, muy amable’.
If you think your taxi ride is very expensive you can say ‘es muy caro!’.
For the price of a taxi ask ‘cuánto cuesta?’.
