Uber in Mallorca: How to Get Around the Island

Yes, you can use Uber in Mallorca, but it’s not always the easiest or most affordable way to get around. Mallorca is a large island and there are better-value ways to get around.

Having travelled extensively around Europe without a car, I’ve learned how to make the most of public transport and Mallorca is no exception. On my own trip to Mallorca, I relied on buses and local taxis to explore the island easily and affordably.  I found that it’s totally possible to enjoy Mallorca without the extra cost of Uber or car hire.

With a bit of planning and the right info, you can navigate Mallorca confidently and comfortably, even if it’s your first time travelling without a car. I’ll take you through what to expect from Uber in Mallorca, how much it costs, and what the alternatives are for getting around the island.

Yes, Uber is now available in Mallorca. The ride-hailing app launched on the island in 2023 with a relatively small fleet, and while the service does technically cover the whole island, it’s easier to find a car in and around popular hubs like Palma than the southeast coast.

You’ll find several of the usual Uber vehicle options offered: UberX, Comfort, Van, Van XL, and Uber Black if you’re after something more high-end.

But don’t expect Uber London or Uber Malta-style pricing.  Uber in Mallorca is not cheap.

In fact, while I often use Uber at home in Cambridge and in other cities where it’s a budget-friendly option, I don’t recommend it for getting around Mallorca. It’s too expensive to be a practical choice for many trips.

When I was using the app in Mallorca, trying to get a taxi from near to Caló des Moro, there was a minimum half an hour wait time before I could book.  This seems to be a result of legislation regarding how Uber can operate in Mallorca, which adds another limit on how useful it is for travelling around Mallorca.

I was shocked at how expensive Uber is in Mallorca. On one journey, I was quoted €75 on the app for a route that ended up costing just €25 with a local taxi. That’s a huge difference and, having done further research, it’s not a one-off.

Add surge pricing into the mix and Uber is simply not a budget friendly way to get around Mallorca.

To give you a rough idea, Uber’s base fare in Mallorca is €3.50, with a minimum fare of €14.20.

If you’re used to using Uber as a cheap way to get about, Mallorca’s pricing might be an unpleasant surprise.

Taxis

Although Uber is an expensive way to travel around Mallorca, thankfully, local taxis are available and at a more reasonable price.

I worked out that the price in southeast Mallorca was around one euro per minute of journey, so a 25 minute trip would cost about €25.

Be aware that in peak times and in smaller, more remote areas there can be long wait times for taxis on Mallorca.  It would be a good idea to reserve ahead in July and August for taxi trips. Shoulder months like May in Mallorca can also be busy but wait times should be shorter.

There are local taxi apps like NTaxi and Mallorcab.  However, I struggled to book a taxi with these as they do not allow taxis to be booked from outside the local province you’re in.

I found it easier just to call a local taxi firm and order a taxi.  I speak Spanish but the operators also spoke English, so this is an easy option. I did have to ring several times before anyone answered but eventually got through.

Buses

Taxis are useful for a quick way to get from A to B but buses on Mallorca are also very useful for getting around.

Buses cover large parts of the island and are cheaper than taxis.  TIB buses connect Palma with the main towns and some beaches.

Make sure to pay with a card on the bus rather than in cash, or you will pay significantly more.

You also need to tap in and out when getting on and off buses.  The machines are located near the driver and by the middle doors (which you must use to exit the bus).

Trains

The capital of Mallorca, Palma, has a very small Metro network, with metro trains running north of Palma only.

There are also a few train routes to a limited number of towns, including Inca, Sa Pobla and Manacor.

For a fun day out, take the old-fashioned train that runs from Palma to Sóller.  This is a great activity to do on Mallorca.  You will need to book in advance for it though, as its very popular and regularly sells out.

How to get to and from the airport in Mallorca

There are a few ways to get from Palma de Mallorca Airport into Palma centre, or out to the other towns.  Which one works best depends on where you’re heading and what time you arrive.

If you’re landing late at night, have luggage, or need to reach a more remote spot, a private transfer is often the easiest option.

It’s door-to-door, reliable, and saves the hassle of figuring out late bus timetables or waiting in the taxi queue with everyone else who’s just landed.

For popular destinations like Palma, Magaluf, Alcúdia or Colònia de Sant Jordi, the airport buses are a budget-friendly choice.

The bus stops are just outside the arrivals area, cross the road and you’ll spot them easily.

Depending on your final destination, you might need to change buses, so check the routes in advance on the TIB website.

Tips for using Uber in Mallorca

If you do want to use Uber in Mallorca, a bit of planning goes a long way. First of all, always check the app in advance. Don’t assume you’ll be able to get a car straight away, especially if you’re outside of Palma.

It’s a good idea to download a local taxi app as a backup and save a couple of local taxi firm numbers to your phone, just in case.

There are plenty of traditional taxis operating across Mallorca and they can be much more affordable than Uber.

If you’re flying in or out, consider if you need to pre-book your airport transfer to avoid any last-minute stress or long queues.

And most importantly, keep your plans flexible. Uber isn’t something I’d rely on as your only means of transport in Mallorca.  It’s best treated as a last resort option, rather than your main way of getting around.

FAQs: Uber in Mallorca

Can I use Uber from Palma Airport?

Yes, you can use Uber from Palma Airport, but it’s worth comparing prices first. A regular taxi or a private transfer might be cheaper.

Is Uber cheaper than taxis in Mallorca?

In my experience, no. Uber was noticeably more expensive than local taxi firms, often by quite a lot.

Do I need Uber or can I rely on public transport in Mallorca?

I travelled around Mallorca by public transport and found it reliable for most places. That said, I did need a taxi on occasion, when buses weren’t running frequently. I used a local taxi instead of Uber because the wait times were shorter and the fares more reasonable.

Wrap up: is Uber in Mallorca worth using?

Uber does work in Mallorca but it comes with limits. Whilst it’s available across the island, it’s not the most practical or affordable option.

If you’re staying in Palma and don’t mind paying a bit extra for convenience, Uber can come in handy. But for exploring the island more widely, you don’t need Uber to get around.

I’d recommend sticking with a mix of public transport and the occasional local taxi or pre-booked transfer.
