9 Top Chora Restaurants: Where to Eat (Andros, Greece)

Chora, the capital of the Greek island of Andros, is one of those towns where meals are to be savoured.  Restaurants here are unhurried and the portions are generous.

I spent two weeks exploring all Andros has to offer and, of course, a large part of my time was spent eating in restaurants in Chora.  Having visited ten Greek islands, I had high expectations of the food on Chora and it didn’t disappoint.

The main street is lined with tavernas, cafés and open-until-late spots.

Down by the seafront you’ll find another group of seafood restaurants with tables overlooking the water.  Although the dining options in Chora aren’t huge, what Chora lacks in size, it makes up for in wonderful evening atmosphere.

I ate at most of the places in the list below, from quick gyros to romantic terraces. I’ve also added a couple of restaurants in Chora that come highly recommended by locals and travellers. Together these make up my nine top places to eat in Chora, Andros.

Where to eat in Chora, Andros

1. Verde

Location: Ag.Olgas square, Chora (next to the bus station)

Price: €€€

What to try: The signature cocktail, Miss Pink, a refreshing mix of champagne, lime and grapefruit.

Verde sits slightly uphill from Chora’s main street, about a ten-minute walk that rewards you with views across the landscape.  The terrace is strung with fairy lights, giving the whole place a soft, romantic glow once the sun sets.

The food was some of the best I ate in Andros.  A rich risotto with the aroma of tomatoes stood out, full of flavour and satisfying without being heavy.  Service is warm and attentive.  Staff even shared tips on other quiet Greek islands worth visiting, which added to the relaxed, unhurried feel of the evening.

2. Endochora

Location: Georgiou Empeirikou, Chora (main street)

Price: €€€

What to try: The amazing panna cotta style pudding, a work of art that looks too good to eat (although that thought didn’t last us long).

Endochora quickly became one of my favourite places to eat in Chora. We sat outside with both our chairs angled towards the pedestrian street, the perfect spot for people-watching as our plates kept arriving.

The atmosphere at Endochora is lively and stylish, with smart décor and attentive service that makes the whole experience feel special.

Homemade pasta is the star here, served in generous portions, and the starters are just as memorable.  We had a delicious fava dip with artisan bread, that was so good I wanted to lick the plate.

Attention is really paid to detail in the presentation at Endochora.  The result is that it’s a popular spot, so booking ahead in peak summer is a good idea, and well worth any wait.

3. Fresco

Location: Georgiou Empeirikou (main street)

Price: €

What to try: Smoothies, fresh juices.

Fresco is a breath of fresh air in Chora, especially if you’ve been sampling rich taverna dishes. The café doubles as a juice and salad bar, offering energy bowls filled with fresh fruit and nuts, smoothies, wraps, soups, toast, and fresh coffee.

It’s also the meeting place for many Explore Andros tours so it’s just as handy for grabbing a quick bite as it is for planning your next trip on the island.  This place is a great choice for vegetarians and vegans, with gluten-free options too.

4. Nefeli

Location: Georgiou Empeirikou (main street)

Price: €€

What to try: The breakfast French toast, a very indulgent way to start your day.

Nefeli is a café-bar with an easy-going feel and serves up portions that are hard to beat.  The giant pizzas are ideal for sharing, and a classic Greek salad is a generous, and perfect accompaniment.

The food here is more on the hearty, everyday side than the refined dishes you’ll find elsewhere in Chora.  It’s simple comfort food, big plates, and a relaxed setting. It’s also a surprisingly good breakfast stop, with a good range of options that set you up well for a day exploring Andros.

5. Lithi Bar & Restaurant

Location: Kairi Square, Chora

Price: €€

What to try: Nachos, house cocktails.

Located at the top of Chora’s long white steps that lead down to the beach, Lithi is worth visiting for its location alone.  It’s an idyllic spot to take a break at, with views that open out to the sea and an unhurried atmosphere that makes you want to linger.

The food is very good for a bar, with plenty of tasty options, but the cocktails are the real highlight.

Grab a sundowner and settle on a cushion on the steps as the sky changes colour.  This is the stuff Greek island holidays are made for.

The staff are genuinely warm too, we even found ourselves bumping into them around Chora town.

6. Ta Skalakia

Location: Georgiou Empeirikou (on the corner of the main street)

Price: €€

What to try: Classic home-cooked dishes

Ta Skalakia is a traditional, family‑run taverna in Chora. It’s the kind of place that catches your eye, with vintage signs and local memorabilia decorating the walls.

Although I wasn’t able to try it myself, reviewers consistently highlight it as a top spot in Chora for its authentic feel.  Booking in advance is strongly recommended.

7. Nonas Mezedopoleio

Location: Nimborio, Chora

Price: €€

What to try: Fresh fish of the day

Nonas is the spot locals point you to when you ask about seafood in Chora. The menu is built around the catch of the day, with plenty of meze plates and classic Greek flavours.

Even if, like me, you don’t eat fish, it’s worth coming here for the setting alone. Right by the water, it’s a lovely place to linger over a long lunch or settle in for dinner as the sun goes down.

8. To Giataki tou Kebab

Location: Georgiou Empeirikou (main street)

Price: €

What to try: Gyros, gyros and more gyros

For something quick, cheap, and reliably tasty, To Giataki tou Kebab is where to go in Chora. The gyros here are filling and full of flavour, perfect for when you want to grab something satisfying on the go.

Mr Flip Flops Included had food from here so often that the owners began to feel like friends, waving at us as we passed by each time. Their kindness went beyond the counter too, once tipping us off about local ferry issues due to a wildfire near the mainland port.

9. Creperie Apolauseis

Location: Georgiou Empeirikou (main street)

Price: €

What to try: Build your own crepe

Right on Chora’s main pedestrian street, Creperie Apolauseis is the place to head to when you need something sweet.  The menu lets you build your own crepe, so you can pile on your favourite fillings or keep it simple.

It’s popular, and for good reason.  Even if you don’t see a queue, chances are there are people waiting nearby for their order.  I may even have made Mr Flip Flops Included take several special trips out in the evenings just to get crepes from this place.

Tips for eating out in Chora

  • Eating times: On Andros, evening meals are eaten late. Dinner often starts from 9 pm.
  • Cash: Some smaller restaurants and bars prefer cash. Keep a little on you.
  • Portions: I found that plates were generous in most places we ate.
  • Don’t miss: Try Fourtalia, Andros’ local potato and sausage dish, similar to a Spanish tortilla.

Final thoughts: best Chora restaurants

Chora’s food scene is compact, friendly and easy to explore on foot.  What really sticks in my memory is the warmth of Andros. Owners who recognise you, waiters who take time to chat, and meals that move at the same unhurried pace as the rest of the island.

Give yourself time to eat slowly, save room for dessert and enjoy watching the world go by.
