Take a Great Day Trip to the Blue Lagoon, Comino, Malta
When you’re visiting Malta you won’t want to miss out on a day trip to the iconic Blue Lagoon on Comino Island. The crystal clear water and stunning shades of turquoise, sapphire and blue make the Blue Lagoon one of the best places to go in Malta.
I’ve taken a day trip to Comino and the Blue Lagoon on more than one occasion and loved it more each time. The Blue Lagoon itself is only a part of what Comino has to offer. There’s plenty more to see and do.
I’ve used my personal experience from visits to the Blue Lagoon to give you all the information you need to have an amazing trip. I’ll cover the top things to do, Comino’s hidden gems and how to get there, plus all the other beaches to visit.

Where is the Blue Lagoon?

Situated in the Mediterranean Sea, and only 3.5 square kilometres, Comino Island is the smallest of Malta’s three main islands (Malta and Gozo are the other two). Comino is pretty much uninhabited and, away from the Blue Lagoon, is a quiet island which I enjoyed exploring.
Is the Blue Lagoon in Malta worth visiting?

Some people don’t like the Blue Lagoon, as it gets very busy during summer season. This means you need to be prepared to share the space with beach umbrellas, deckchairs, and many other visitors.
In fact, in 2025 Malta announced steps to curb the high tourism to the Blue Lagoon. There are plans to introduce a daily visitor number cap.
Inflatable pink flamingos and cocktail-filled pineapples are another reason that you might not enjoy a trip to the Blue Lagoon. They do take something away from the natural appeal of the landscape.
However, for me, the turquoise waters of the Blue Lagoon shimmer and shine and, despite the hoards of people, are still enticing enough for me to get over the negatives. There is also much more to do on Comino besides just seeing the Blue Lagoon.
So, if you go with this in mind, I still think the Blue Lagoon is worth visiting when you’re in Malta.
How to get to the Blue Lagoon on Comino Island, Malta

It’s very easy to get to the Blue Lagoon. There are frequent ferries and boat tours that will take you to the Blue Lagoon from both Gozo and Malta.
To make a great day of it, and have somewhere to relax away from the crowds, book one of the excellent Blue Lagoon boat tours which depart from Sliema, Buġibba and St. Paul’s Bay.
You can also rent your own boat on Malta and take yourself around the Blue Lagoon. No licence required.
How to get the Blue Lagoon ferry to Comino
Gozo to Blue Lagoon
It takes only 15 minutes to get the ferry from Gozo to the Blue Lagoon. This is a brilliant low cost option which I’ve used myself and found very convenient. The return ferries do get very busy though, so be prepared that you might have to wait.
Cirkewwa, Malta, to Blue Lagoon
It takes 25 minutes to get to the Blue Lagoon from Cirkewwa in the north of Malta, by ferry.
How much is the Blue Lagoon Malta ferry?
Tickets for the Blue Lagoon ferry cost from €15 return with Comino Ferries Co-op Ferries, or from €10 return with Ebsons Ferries.
Luggage at the Blue Lagoon
During summer there’s a left luggage area at the Blue Lagoon with lockers from €6 per day.
Do I need to book tickets in advance?
The Blue Lagoon, Malta, is a popular destination, so during the spring and summer I recommend that you book ferry tickets in advance in order to secure the most convenient date and time for your trip.
You can also visit the Blue Lagoon as part of a day boat tour, This is a great way to spend a day on Malta.
What to do at the Blue Lagoon

Arrive early, on the first ferry, to have any chance of beating the crowds during summer.
If you arrive at the Blue Lagoon after 10am you’ll be greeted with chaotic scenes. Crowds of people will be swarming all over the rocks, seeking non-existent shade. However, if you’re patient, you should still be able to find a little space for yourself.
You can rent an umbrella and deckchair, or go straight for a dip. You absolutely must experience floating in the sparkling blue water of the Blue Lagoon.
Away from the Blue Lagoon itself, there’s lots more to enjoy in day on Comino Island.

What beaches are there on Comino, apart from the Blue Lagoon?
For the best experience, don’t miss the other beaches on Comino, as well as the Blue Lagoon.
The Crystal Lagoon

One of my favourite spots on Comino is the Crystal Lagoon. It’s almost as blue as the Blue Lagoon, but much less busy.
You can reach the Crystal Lagoon by walking past the Blue Lagoon and keeping going. However, I enjoyed getting to it from the side near the abandoned isolation hospital. The views across Comino to Malta are stunning.
You’ll likely find other people here doing cliff diving or enjoying a swim away from the crowds.
Cominotto

The spit of beach opposite the Blue Lagoon is Cominotto and is a sight of special scientific interest.
You can reach it by swimming across from the Blue Lagoon. The journey isn’t that far but it gets deep in parts. It’s a fun challenge if you’re sure you can make the return journey safely.
I’m not a strong swimmer but made it over on my visits, although it was a bit exhausting.
Santa Marija Bay

Around to the east of Comino you’ll find Santa Marija Bay, a small sandy and rocky beach. It’s another world, compared to the Blue Lagoon, it’s so much quieter.
From here you can also head over to the Santa Maria Caves.

St Niklaw Bay (St. Nicholas Bay)
Walk up past the food trucks and head over to San Niklaw Bay on the northern side of Comino. This spot houses the Comino hotel and you can find lovely quiet bits of beach and rocks to stretch out on.
Other things to do at the Blue Lagoon, Comino

When you’re ready to get away from the crowds at the Blue Lagoon, take a hike around Comino Island. Within about five minutes of walking away from the hustle and bustle, you’ll find peace, quiet, and hardly another soul. Here are the highlights from my own walking adventures on Comino:
The Chapel of Our Lady’s Return from Egypt – a 17th-century chapel that still holds regular mass.
Comino Pig Farm – a derelict site that maintains many of the original features from when it was built in the 1970s to help Malta during a Foot in Mouth crisis.
Santa Maria Battery – this historic site still has canons set up as they would have been when it was constructed to defend Comino in the early 18th-century.

St. Mary’s Tower – built in 1816 and made famous by the film The Count of Monte Cristo. There are great views across to the Red Tower on Malta.

The abandoned isolation hospital – used during the Second World War, it can be seen from nearby St. Mary’s Tower.
Rent a kayak – from near the food trucks and the ferry landing area.
Dive – there’s a shipwreck for divers to explore in the sea in front of St. Mary’s Tower, along with other dive sites near Cominotto.
Where to eat on Comino?

There are plenty of food and drink trucks located at the Blue Lagoon. Most accept card payment.
Toilets and showers are located just past the food area.
Visiting the Blue Lagoon outside of Summer

Most methods of getting to the Blue Lagoon operate frequently from April/May to September/October.
However, Comino Ferries Co-op and Ebsons Ferries do run reduced services from both Malta and Gozo to the Blue Lagoon during winter. Contact them in advance to check for times.
How much time should I spend at the Blue Lagoon, Malta?
I recommend making a whole day trip out of a visit to Comino. You can spend part of it splashing about in the azure waters of the Blue Lagoon. Then use the rest of the time to explore all the other things to do on Comino.
Places to stay on Comino Island

There are only two options for staying on Comino:
There are, however, some other great places to stay in Malta and Gozo, particularly if you travel without a car.
Wrap Up
Malta’s Blue Lagoon is an incredible place to visit for the day. However, it is very popular. To have an easy and fun trip you can book one of the Blue Lagoon boat tours from Sliema, Buġibba or St. Paul’s Bay.
However you get there, don’t miss checking out some of the other things to do whilst you’re on Comino.
